Particularly, the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD) has been experiencing some of the worst droughts and salinity intrusion in the past decades due to the compounded effects of anthropogenic flow alteration, groundwater extraction, land subsidence, and rising sea level. As a result, water scarcity is increasingly pressuring the local populace to find alternative freshwater sources aside from surface water and groundwater. Rainwater harvesting is one of such alternative practices which have been studied and utilized throughout the world in both developed and developing nations. However, rainwater harvesting practices in the VMD are spontaneous with ad-hoc implementation and neglected by the local government despite its proven effectiveness around the world if harnessed optimally and efficiently. This thesis aims to achieve two main objectives: (1) the assessment of the implementation feasibility of rainwater harvesting systems (RWHS) (given environmental, socio-economic, and institutional conditions) as a potential strategy for integrated water management; and (2) the design and technical considerations of RWHS in the study area – Binh Dai district, Ben Tre province. Particularly, specific tasks inherent to achieving the objectives involve (a) rainwater assessment in both quality and quantity which will be the basis for (b) RWHS technical consideration and concept layout; (c) cost-benefit analysis of the proposed RWHS; and (d) potential recommendations for policy and expansion of uses |
