Title: Securing the supply of cast components for the combustion engine in the changing automotive industry: designing effective partnership approaches and recommendations for action for porsche AG

Issue Date: 2024
Abstract:
The automotive industry is currently undergoing a structural technological transition from internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicles (EV). As this shift toward e-mobility disrupts the traditional supplier base, securing a stable supply of ICE components has become increasingly challenging due to supplier consolidation and strategic realignments. Despite these industry-wide changes, the demand for high-performance sports vehicles with combustion engines—a core unique selling point for Porsche AG—remains resilient.

This thesis identifies key supply chain challenges through extensive literature research and expert interviews conducted with internal stakeholders at Porsche AG and external specialists from critical suppliers. Based on these findings, the study proposes strategic measures to enhance supply security, culminating in a recommended framework for contract extensions. This framework is designed to mitigate identified risks and facilitate long-term collaborative partnership planning.

The transparency gained through these contractual enhancements enables cost efficiencies for suppliers while bolstering strategic supply security for Porsche AG—a vital necessity given the company's high dependency on highly specific components. Furthermore, the integration of market-dependent quantity adjustments provides a robust contractual basis for consensual and sustainable pricing models. Finally, the thesis formalizes a 'last-man-standing' strategy within the contract, ensuring a stable supply of ICE components through to the spare parts phase, thereby securing the supply base throughout the industry's electrification transformation
