In Ho Chi Minh City, literature on mobility of care is almost non-existent. At the same time, the city faces tremendous traffic and environmental issues caused by private vehicles, prompting the government to initiate a shift toward sustainable mobility. This research aims to investigate the characteristics of mobility of care trips in Ho Chi Minh City and to examine the challenges of using sustainable modes for such trips. By doing so, it seeks to understand how sustainable mobility can address the unique needs associated with mobility of care. The study identifies women as the principal performers of mobility of care, and this applies to both escorting and shopping trips. Trip chaining is common, and its benefits are widely recognised, indicating that an efficient mode for mobility of care needs to be flexible. Barriers to walking and cycling for mobility of care include weather conditions, the relatively slow speed of these modes (which makes time-sensitive care trips difficult), and long travel distances. Barriers to using buses include long wait times and lack of punctuality, limited route availability and operating hours, and infrastructure that is unsuitable for carrying heavy items or accompanying vulnerable family members (such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities). The study’s results may enable policymakers to implement improvements that increase the use of sustainable mobility for mobility of care, as well as for travel in general. |
