Title: Biodegradable materials in footwear industry development application and opportunities for future growth
Authors: Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh
Keywords: Biodegradable materials;Footwear manufacturing;Sustainable materials;Sustainable product development
Issue Date: 2025
Abstract:
Almost forty different materials are used to produce a single pair of shoes, many of which generate significant waste, much of it ending up in landfills or producing toxic emissions when incinerated. This highlights the urgent need for sustainable alternatives. While existing research has largely focused on the properties of individual materials, little attention has been given to their practical application and future development in the footwear industry. This study systematically reviews advancements in biodegradable materials and examines their integration into footwear manufacturing, addressing opportunities for growth and adoption. The findings provide valuable insights for researchers and industry stakeholders, offering guidance for sustainable material selection, practical implementation, and long-term development strategies, ultimately supporting the transition toward a more environmentally responsible and circular footwear industry.
