Title: Development of guidelines to improve worker safety in remanufacturing locations
Authors: Tran Vu Lam
Keywords: Personal protective equipment;Safety guidelines;Circular economy;Manual handling
Issue Date: 2024
Abstract:
Worker safety in remanufacturing environments is a critical concern due to the manual nature of many processes, which increases the risk of injuries. Remanufacturing, a key component of the circular economy, restores end-of-life products to their original or superior performance, but presents unique safety challenges including manual handling, chemical exposure, and ergonomic risks. This thesis develops comprehensive safety guidelines tailored specifically for remanufacturing settings. An extensive review of existing standards, such as OSHA and ISO, highlights their limitations when applied to these environments. To address these gaps, the proposed guidelines incorporate risk assessment tools, personal protective equipment (PPE) standards, and ergonomic solutions designed for the specific hazards of remanufacturing operations. The study provides actionable recommendations to improve workplace safety, reduce injury risks, and support the broader implementation of sustainable and efficient remanufacturing practices.
