Issue Date: 2024
Abstract:
Security is an essential requirement of many projects, an Web Applications are among the most commonly used software. However, application security is often not at the forefront of developers’ priorities, yet much knowledge and effort is required to maintain security adequate by modern software standards. In an effort to learn both Software Development and Application Security, a web application was built with security vulnerabilities sprinkled in. The application is built upon the GoTH stack (Go, Templ, HTMX) and contains vulnerabilities from the OWASP Top Ten, as well as fixes and mitigations for said vulnerabilities. The project aims to discover how vulnerabilities can creep into an application, what guard rails may be employed by authors of tools and libraries to protect developers from creating security issues, and can be done be both tool/library developers and application developers to minimize such risks. This thesis documents the project, as well as findings related to the aforementioned objectives to identify and mitigate risks of security issues infecting the application, all based on the student’s experience building the application.
