Title: | The typology of periphery and street markets in Ho Chi Minh City | Authors: | Alex Lee Kuan Chien | Keywords: | Periphery;Street markets;Ho Chi Minh City | Issue Date: | 2020 | Publisher: | Vietnamese-German University | Abstract: | In the early 2000s a series of public food safety issues in Vietnam pushed the authorities to promulgate policies favoring the modernization of the food distribution chain and stimulating the development of supermarkets while actively discouraging traditional markets. However, the preference towards less sanitary and less regulated traditional markets remains. The current planning approach of traditional market areas in urban Vietnam is heavily weighted towards an administration-centric approach. The ambiguous legality of the periphery and street market space is due to the disconnect between on-the-ground conventions and policy aspirations. This study aims to uncover the “what is” questions surrounding these market areas by dissecting the spatial and social typology of these spaces. In this context, a periphery market is defined as the area around an actual market that is not centrally organized and transitions into the urban architecture while the street market is explained as an informal market alongside a street. To test the hypothesis that the market’s spatial typology is evolved from the social dimensions instead of the technical guidelines and policies, spatial data in the form of stall and shop placement of a suburban market, Chợ Tạm Chùa Khánh An, and a central urban market, Chợ Bà Chiểu were analyzed alongside interviews with vendors. This was further supplemented with reviews of prior literature in the same field, to uncover links and relationships between society and authority towards the production of space. The results suggest that the current policies towards traditional market development emphasize socio-economical concerns, but the markets have evolved through unique social-cultural developments, causing street and periphery markets to deviate from the goals of the policies. Because of this, a less deterministic, more conversational approach to planning may better suit the development of the ambiguous street and periphery market areas |
