Phu Xuan commune was chosen for the case study representing newly residential development in HCMC; of which the cluster of Sai Gon Port- Van Hung Phu-Van Phat Hung was chosen for observation. Because of time limitation and accessible condition to households, Sai Gon Port project was chosen to implement questionnaire and interview. The study is explorative research in which qualitative and quantitative approaches was applied. To be specific, 30 semi-structured questionnaires was taken place with face-to- face method and in-depth interviews was conducted with 5 key persons namely 3 three specific gardeners, one leader of community and one local authority in charge of land use. The study found that urban farming in HCMC is actively, changeably, locally,
accessibly, high-tech and less-land-based intensive, especially the arrival and popularity of household farming in high-density urbanized areas. Gardening in the case study is temporary use of vacant land, of which land-based garden is more preferable than other types such as boxed garden and roof garden. Temporary garden has emerged and developed from personal motivations: food provision as driven force and cleaning and protecting neighborhood from wildly animals, disease vectors, and criminals. Unlike temporary use in vacant land which community garden is more common, such a kind of garden is toward private use because of private ownership in vacant land. Moreover, the study also determined benefits brought by temporary garden in 5 mentioned fields. Food security can be improved by self-food production locally, contributing to health of community via impacts of eating habit and physical activities. Economic benefits were shown in the field of food expenditure, income and property value. Environmental benefits was reflected by better living environment and enhance the ecological services along with reduction of food miles, contributing to the mitigation of carbon emission. Finally, besides safety in living and educational value, the study found that unclear connection between individuals who are from different socio-demographic situations; of which bonding
capital concentrates on family relationship, however, shareable intention and activity between households were recorded in the case study
