This thesis looks at how the distributed ledger technology IOTA works, and the planned updates by the IOTA foundation. A variation of the Winternitz one-time signature scheme is used for signing and validation of transactions and messages. IOTA allows offline tangle to be made in case connection to the internet is lost. Masked Authenticated Messaging is a special feature that allows data publishers to sell their data easily. Consensus in the tangle is asynchronous unlike other distributed ledger technology, resulting in the problem that is the confirmed status of transactions being uncertain. The problem is dealt with with the use of the coordinator. The coordinator is currently being run by the IOTA coordination to help keep the tangle safe, it however makes the network centralized. Many changes are planned to take place after the removal of the coordinator. A method that will allow the identification of nodes and rewarding or penalizing them for their action is promised. Overhauling of the consensus algorithm is proposed. This includes changes to the default tip selection algorithm and a voting system that let nodes directly communicate to resolve conflicts. Changes to the proof of work concept so as to make them more adaptive is also mentioned. This thesis concludes that the tangle at the current state is very primitive when compared to how it is envisioned. Changes proposed by the IOTA foundation has only been in ideas. IOTA is centralized but there are drastic changes to come.en_US
