The year is 2019, technology is booming, people are talking about electric cars, renewable energy, artificial intelligence and yet, to get a drink in VGU’s campus, you have to walk almost a kilometer to and back to the canteen to get a drink. Such inconvenience has been addressed by various groups doing small business on the campus ground. As students cannot be full-time shopkeepers as they have obligations during the day, they set up a system where you can acquire common soft drinks of choice from a fridge and leave money in a nearby box as payment. While it is very tempting to believe in the goodwill of society, this system is flawed in the way that it relies on the civility of customers. Deficits accumulated over time for the owner and all he can do is threaten to shut down the business and make the student body again commit to the pilgrimage to the canteen. To capitalize on the demand and completely obliterate the horrible system that was implemented in the past, the computer science and electrical engineering departments have joined arms and provide a solution not too unfamiliar: vending machines with a cashless payment system. This thesis discusses the requirements, challenges, solutions and sometimes compromises made during the making of the code that controls a vending machine that is yet to be built.en_US
