Title: | Impact of motivation on employee satisfaction in software companies in Ho Chi Minh city | Authors: | Ho Ngoc Tien | Keywords: | Employee satisfaction;Software companies;Human resource | Issue Date: | 2014 | Publisher: | Vietnamese-German University | Abstract: | With an interest to study about one of the fastest growing industry in Vietnam, at the same time one of the fastest emerging countries, the author has chosen to look into the IT industry and conduct one of the first research on the non-technical side of this business, its human resources. The importance of human resources management is inevitable in all companies and industries; yet how companies understand and manage its people is different, and should be different. IT software companies lead a league of high-tech and highly educated individuals, who have different aspirations and work motivations as compared to other industries. This paper focuses in one of the most important aspects in human resources management, which is employee satisfaction and the impact of motivation on employee satisfaction. A survey, conducted via focus group direct interview and online questionnaire, has been done with a sample of about 100 software engineers in various IT firms in Ho Chi Minh City. The intention is to collect data about the engineers’ demographics and how satisfied they are about their work, based on their feedback about four key factors of motivation: Salary, Benefits and Rewards System, Leadership and Management, Working conditions, and self or career advancement opportunities. The results mostly support the hypothesis about the positive relationship between work motivation and job satisfaction. This re-emphasizes the importance of motivating people for better work satisfaction and leading onto better staff retention, productivity and eventually company profits. The finding from this paper will be beneficial for owners, managers, team leaders and human resources executives in IT industries and other industries when building their business management strategies. There are limitations in this research including limitation in time, sample size, and diversity of respondents, but the findings from this paper is still a valuable source of reference for future researches. Further expansion on the sample size can be done by later researchers to re-evaluate the results. It is also recommended that further development of the problem statement can look at whether change in work motivation factors leads to change in employee satisfaction and re-evaluate the relationship between these two aspects. Human resources directors and business stakeholders can use the results from this study to set up a new review cycle to make sure they understand the needs and motivation of each individual employees and offer the right thing and the right time, in order to raise employee satisfaction and devotion, at the same time raising their expectation on employee work performance. Similar study and approaches might be trialed and tested in other industries for similar purpose. |
