Authors: Tran Tuan Linh
Keywords: Flexible working arrangement;Small and medium enterprises;SMEs
Issue Date: 2016
Publisher: Vietnamese-German University
Abstract:
Purpose: While flexible working time is an old subject of other countries, this is still very new in Vietnam especially for local SMEs. Therefore, this research focuses on pointing out benefits and difficulties of applying flexitime in Vietnamese SMEs under employers and employees perspectives, then explore whether flexible working time can be applied in local working environment, and finally to understand conditions that could bring flexible working arrangement to local business which could generate more benefits for both employers and employees.
Research Method: Due to the nature of doing business in Vietnam, which the employers hold all power and create company policies on their own, in-depth interview to understand employers’ opinion will be conducted. At the same time, on employees’ side, multiple questionnaires will be sent to get their opinion anonymously. This is a mixed qualitative and quantitative research that get results from local SMEs with flat organization.
Findings: On employees’ side, flexible working time will help them to gain more work life balance, leading to increase working motivation with loyalty then finally increase overall business performance of the whole company. On employers’ side, work life balance, loyalty and business performance are confirmed positively related to the application of flexitime, however, motivation are likely to be no relationship with flexible working time. Another noticeable finding that, employers are normally think about work life balance for themselves only and not their staff situation.
Recommendations: To adapt the trend of FWA, it’s highly to recommend both employers and employees to be in trust and to truly understand benefits and risks of using FWA. As part of all culture, communication is one of the most important skill that all people in a company should be used to understand the need of each other, from that to bring up some suitable solution to explore a new working behaviors, which the world has used it for more than decades.
Research limitation: With the short time and size of survey companies at around 7 with more than 100 survey, this research are not able to represent the majority of local SMEs. However, it brings some new perspectives of Vietnam working environment with FWA, which is new in Vietnam but old in the world. The result has showed there is a question mark about relationship between FWA and Motivation especial on employers’ side and create a chance for future research on this.
