Title: | Local managing director in a multinational enterprise - Who you are? | Authors: | Thoi Nhat Dinh | Keywords: | Local managing director;Multinational companies | Issue Date: | 2017 | Publisher: | Vietnamese-German University | Abstract: | Purpose: There is a tendency of hiring local people for Managing Director position in multinational companies. Therefore, this research has been implemented to explore some factors influencing to be promoted to top management board in multinational enterprises for Vietnamese people. Then, it can create the driving force for local managers to develop their career. Some comparison in leadership styles between Vietnamese people and foreigners have also be identified. They help managers being flexible their leadership in order to get the respect and true support from local subordinates. Last but not least, local staffs can realize the advantages and disadvantages they have when their managers is local people or foreigners, then try to adapt with. Research Method: By in-deep interviewing with a prepared list of managing directors and top managers, including Vietnamese people and foreigners, a lot of comments, ideas, remarks and recommendations will be collected and analyzed. Simultaneously, multiple questionnaires is evaluated by Vietnamese staffs who are working in MNEs, then, SPSS, a popular statistics software program is applied for data analysis. This is a mixed qualitative and quantitative research. Findings: Working experience, centralization organization structure and being authentic leaders are three key factors help Vietnamese people becoming MDs in MNEs. Authentic leaders are described in the way to achieve the result, trust level and the inspired or influenced ability. Another point is management and leadership skills needed to be combined and they depend on each individual, not affected much by the culture or nationality. The more the leader is trained and learnt, the more professional leadership skill they have. With the qualified Vietnamese MD, the business result of company can be improved significantly after replacement. Recommendations: To be promoted into higher levels in multinational organization, in particular, managing director position, trying to be the best in any workplace, in team, in any situation with the high level of competency. And the important thing is that a strategy plan should be prepared and fulfilled by the individual’s efforts continuously. When working in multination environment, understanding the culture of the headquarters or foreign colleagues and build similar mindset case by case will help the individuals to adapt with and easily get the trust from them. Research limitation: In this research, most of MNEs are in manufacturing and production industry. The other industries such as Sales, Marketing or Services are out of the research scope. Besides, company size and how many years MNE has established and operated in Vietnam are under investigated. With the short time of research and the limitation in communication, researcher could do the interview with three Vietnamese MDs only even though the list of local MDs has nine people. |
