Title: | Development of a heuristic-based A* search for a traffic light signal control problem | Authors: | Pham Ngoc Bao Lam | Keywords: | Heuristic-based A* search;Signal control patterns;Controlling traffic | Issue Date: | 2018 | Publisher: | Vietnamese-German University | Abstract: | Controlling traffic in roads is an important problem due to the rising of delay, fuel cost and pollution caused by traffic congestion. Classical signal control systems often use fixed signal timing plans for intersection in a traffic network which can be reliable over a limited time horizon and needs to be updated frequently. It is therefore recognized that traffic signal control systems able to adapt to current traffic conditions offer a bigger payoff for reducing congestion and improving efficiency. However, the adaptive control brings on challenges in terms of computational efficiency and solution quality since the combined number of signal control patterns and traffic conditions is huge and grows exponentially with respect to the size of the traffic network. Hence, it is necessary to develop an efficient algorithm to deal with this problem. The objective of this thesis is to develop a computationally efficient heuristic based on A* search to achieve near-optimal signal timing plans for the traffic light control problem at an individual intersection. The solutions from the proposed method are then compared to an existing approach named the schedule-driven intersection control (SchIC) algorithm. |
