Title: Learning environment for material flow simulation with lego mindstorms
Authors: Ho Phuong Thao
Keywords: Material flow simulation;Lego mindstorms
Issue Date: 2016
Publisher: Vietnamese-German University
Abstract:
Simulation for material flows are a powerful tool to analyze more alternatives of factory operation within a shorter period of time. The preparation, execution and evaluation (simulation circle) of simulation studies for material flow simulation however are complicated tasks, which require experts. Thus, non-simulation-educated people can hardly benefit from this kind of technology. Potentials for an improved factory operation often remain unrecognized. New forms of learning are required, which allows almost everyone to easily learn about simulation. The goal of this master thesis is to build up a learning environment for material flow simulation. It consists of a physical Lego Mindstorms model, a programmable logic controller (PLC) and a simulation model. With Lego a factory is established. It contains not obvious recognizable bottlenecks, which the learner shall detect through a simulation study. The PLC is required for determining the actions of the single actuators of the Lego factory. The PLC shall be controlled via simulation software. This enables learners to influence the behavior of the Lego factory e.g. to test their possible improvements. The simulation model is designed as an abstraction of the Lego factory, where learners pass through the simulation circle.
