Title: Application of B-spline basis functions for the material point method
Authors: Huynh Thuc Khang
Keywords: Material point method;Linear elastic materials;B-splines
Issue Date: 2017
Publisher: Vietnamese - German University
Abstract:
This thesis presents the application of B-splines as the basis functions for the approximation used in the Material Point Method applied for two-dimensional problems of linear elastic materials. The advantage of this approach is the non-negative nature of B-splines which makes more sense for the approximation of the mass matrix. Theoretical background of the method is first presented through the governing equations. Then the introduction of B-splines basis functions for the approximation is shown. Details about numerical implementation which includes setting up of computational domains, creation of basis functions, and organization of computational cycles are presented. To validate the proposed method, various numerical examples areanalyzed and comparisons with other authors are shown. Good agreements with other authors are observed. Finally, limitation of the proposed method is addressed and future work is proposed.
