Abstract:
Economic recessions had a huge impact on the number of participants of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a key program in the social safety net in the USA. Past literature has found that a recession generally leads to a rise in the participation of SNAP, but not much research has been conducted to compare the effect on participation in states which were hardest hit by an economic crisis and the remaining states. In this paper, I design a regression model to identify the effect of the 2008 economic crisis on SNAP participation. I use the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ unemployment rate as the indicator of recession severity in each state. The findings suggest that the 2008 recession resulted to increased participation in SNAP in the USA and in states which were hardest hit by the economic crisis.
