Keywords: | Income inequality;Inequality | Issue Date: | 2018 | Publisher: | Vietnamese-German University | Abstract: | Since the early 2000s, the Vietnamese economy has achieved stellar performance thanks to policies aiming at poverty elevation and economic transition. The World Bank (2017) reports that growth has reached 6.8 percent in 2017 and has been expanding rapidly since 2002. As a result, the general living standards have significantly been improved. However, there is a growing income gap between the rich and the poor, which gives rise to economic inequality, a trend that is socially undesirable and might be the root of economic stagnation in the future. Our thesis, therefore, is devoted to analyzing the situation of income inequality in Vietnam by investigating various determinants of the country's increasingly noticeable problem. Taking advantage of the nationally representative surveys (VHLSS) in 2002, 2004 and 2006, our regression results highlight two main sources of economic inequality, namely the location of residence and the characteristics of the households such as demographic, education, work, household size and the number of earners. |
