Issue Date: 2017

Abstract:
The impact of FDI on the economic growth of recipient countries has been controversially debated and resulted in many research studies with varied conclusions. Most researches result in the existence of the positive effects of FDI on driving the host economies’ growth, some, nevertheless, show the negative effects or few cases argue that the impact is null. Certain factors have influences on the impact within the relation, which are: financial markets, host country absorptive capacity, human capital, and technology. In addition, based on the neoclassical growth theory, a country’s economy is driven substantially by capital accumulation (Solow, 1956). FDI contributes to the growth of recipient economies not only by adding to the nation’s capital stock but also by providing valuable technological and knowledge spillovers from the more developed investor countries. According to a study on 90 selected countries carried out by Andreas Johnson (2006), FDI has positive growth impact on developing countries but negative on developed countries. The case of Vietnam is chosen to demonstrate the impact of foreign investment on a developing country, which is also an emerging market and a transition economy. The country’s economy has gone through major transitions, which induced considerable changes in the national economic indicators, especially GDP growth and FDI received. Vietnam implemented the economic renovation (Doi Moi) in 1986 boosting the country’s economy impressively. The country also took part in several regional and international organizations since 1995 to continue its world economic integration. As a result of above events, Vietnamese economy became more open to the global economy, coupled with cheap labour and natural national resources, Vietnam attracted high FDI inflows and gained strong economic growth( Figure 1). Compared to other developing economies, there is a limited number of available empirical analyses addressing the relationship between FDI and economic growth in Vietnam in recent years. Therefore, this research is conducted with the purpose to collect the empirical evidence using data from 2006-2015 to answer the central question: Whether FDI has a positive impact on economic growth in Vietnam?
