Title: How could sustainable consumption for green technology be increased?
Authors: Tran Vo Minh Thu
Keywords: Sustainable consumption;Sustainability;Green technology
Issue Date: 2018
Publisher: Vietnamese-German University
Abstract:
With the increasing environmental problems, green transportation which is less harmful to the environment is a topic to consider and discuss. Therefore, it is important to investigate further the significant drivers to and barriers against sustainable consumption and consumer behavior, how to understand the consumer perceptions of a green car and the way to change the consumption behaviors in order to increase the share of green car consumption. The present paper will be structured as follows: the first section lays out the definition and types of green car and its positive impact on the environment and sustainable development. Additionally, a brief overview of the greenhouse gas emissions situation related to the vehicles on the road worldwide is presented. In the second part, a concept of consumer behavior and green consumption will be discussed. Additionally, a literature review of the theory of wants and needs can explain the motivations in cognitive and non-cognitive aspects that drive humans to consume. After a full understanding about consumer motivations to conduct a purchasing action, section three discusses the difficulties in approaching and changing consumer behavior toward pro-environment action. Section four focuses on the factors of social learning that can influence and change a consumer behavior in a social context. A few pieces of research and theories from numerous psychologists, economists, and sociologists are presented in order to make a change on an individual's green consumption behavior. In section five, further considerations and implications of social learning are approached with the theoretical model of Buenstorf and Cordes (2008) to help the policy-makers and auto-makers issue reasonable policy instruments. The diffusion of green car technology is the subject matter of section six. A brief history of electric vehicles shaped the background of a diffusion of green cars. Some scenarios are suggested and discussed to get a better knowledge of competition between a conventional car and green electric car on the market.
