First, previous studies on economies of scope and economies of diversification are reviewed and main findings are highlighted. Next, the thesis employs the probit model to examine the determinants of SMEs‟ likelihood to expand their scope of production. The results show that innovativeness and financial supports in terms of loans and external informal funds have a positive impact on SMEs diversification decisions. Incontrast, obstacles related to government quality, such as difficulty in obtaining business licenses and permits; corruption; and court problems hinder SMEs‟ likelihood to add another business line into the current operation. There is also a considerable connection between growth of firms and the decision to expand production scope. |
