Title: Impacts of socio-economic differentials on birth maternity in Vietnam
Authors: Ngo Thi Hai Thanh
Keywords: Socio-economic differentials;Birth maternity
Issue Date: 2019
Publisher: Vietnamese-German University
Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between socio-economic determinants and birth masculinity in Vietnam by using data from Vietnam National Population and Housing Census 2009. The study suggests the presence of high sex ratio at birth in Red River Delta and in the third or higher birth parity if mothers do not have previous son child. In addition, the relationship between sex ratio at birth and socio-economic variations follow inverted-U pattern. Multivariate analyses indicate that the magnitude of correlation between parental characteristics and offspring gender is not high but statistically significant in some variables. The sample is divided into many birth order and gender composition subsamples in the model in order to deeply analyze this relationship. The results conclude that age, working sectors, educational status of parents and regional characteristics contribute to the skewness birth masculinity in Vietnam.
