| dc.description.abstract | Generally, corruption is believed to hinder innovation at country levels. However, that is not the always the case because corruption causes two opposite impacts on firms’ innovative performance. Therefore, this paper examines both of the effects using four corruption measures, namely bribe, tax administration, corruption perceived as an obstacle and time dealing with the government, on the firms’ innovative performance in worldwide markets. Innovation is measured in terms of new product introductions and significant process improvements. This thesis employs the World Bank Enter Surveys (WBES) database, covering over 130,000 firms from a large number of countries. After correcting for potential endogeneity problems, the issues indicate a positive relationship between establishments’ bribery and product innovation. On the other hand, perceived corruption obstacles show the reversed correlation to process innovation. Last but not least, time working with the government’s legislation seemingly impedes the two kinds of innovation. | - |
