Abstract: 
Electrocardiography (ECG) is used to diagnose heart disease in patients, especially in the cases of heart rate variability. Typically, in order to analyze heart beat process, ECG data has to be acquired during a long time period (in most cases, during 24 hours or 48 hours), thus a large memory space is required and time for data transfer is large. ECG volume data is then transferred from electrocardiogram to a specialized computer which will process and analyze the data. Therefore, an effective data compression scheme for ECG signals is required in many practical applications including ECG signal storage and transmission.
There are many methods for compressing data such as Fast Fourier Transform ,(FFT), Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) or Discrete Wavelets Transform (DWT). Every method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Because the advantages of the wavelet transform are multi-
resolution capability and high energy compaction properties, this method is the best transform for compression. The goal for this thesis is to develop the system which uses the Discrete Wavelet Transform to compress ECG data.
A standard engineering process was carried out for the realization of this project: problem analysis, solution design, solution developments and testing. Knowledge gained from a wide variety of courses taught at VGU engineering Mathematics, Digital Signal Processing, Electronics, High Level Programming Language, Microcontroller and Embedded System) was applied and augmented throughout the development and testing process.
The main objective of this thesis is to successfully design an algorithm to construct and reconstruct electrocardiography signal. A hardware prototype is built to measure ECG signal and transfer signal to the embedded board for data compression.
The components of my work include:

Implement the DWT algorithm in Matlab programming language.
Testing Matlab code with different wavelet families, different layers and variety of ECG signal from MIT database to evaluate the data compression algorithm.
Design ECG measurement hardware and implement on bread board.
implement compress and decompress algorithm in C programming language and testing them on PC and Beaglebone Black.
Many tests were involved in order to find out the best value of every component in ECG measurement circuit. The circuit must measure the proper cardiac signal, meanwhile reducing the noise from the outside environment as much as possible.
