Abstract:
Range detecting is an interesting issue that engineers have been solving so far. Infrared, ultrasonic and radio-wave are main approaches for it. Standing out of all, radars prove to have edges in short range and medium range detection. Over 80 years, the designs of radar and its applied techniques have changed quickly and will continue advancing in the future.
A functional frequency-modulated continuous wave radar is investigated and built in this thesis. The radar is implemented from radio-frequency modules, along with analog circuits and a microcontroller. Antenna design is also implemented into the radar system, where highly-directional ones are required.
This report conveys literature reviews on the structure of radars, especially Frequency- Modulated Continuous Wave radar, radar equations, radar cross section and method for radars’ performance evaluation as a range detector. The characterization of high-frequency modules is included as a key part of the analysis process. The performance curves of the these modules are performed by Matlab. A pyramidal horn antenna, used for transmitting and receiving, is designed and simulated by software Antenna Magus, subsequently fabricated and tested. The extracted signal is processed by ADC peripherals in the microcontroller. The microcontroller also monitors modulation signal by a DAC chip. Finally, the experimental performance of the whole system is illustrated and analyzed by a computer software.
