dc.description.abstractThis project consists of designing and testing the performance of small-scale Vertical Axis Wind Turbine using Savonius blades and a synchronous generator. In addition, the project compares the performance of two and three blades with various overlap distance. First of all, a literature review is necessary to fully understand the theory and the different types and characteristic of VAWTs. A Solidworks program, drawing tool, is used to create 2D sketches and 3D models of Savonius wind turbines components, namely blades, shaft, generator in order to understand the operation of Savonius Wind Turbines and to know the requirement of material for constructing physical models. Physical designs of VAWTs is built to test, compare the performance, and figure out which design give the best results about rotor rotation, torque, power coefficient, tip speed ratio and electrical power under different wind conditions. From many steps, we concluded the turbine has two blades with overlap distance equals 0.04 m produced the strongest output power, highest power coefficient and torque. All the references we used to study the characteristics of Savonius wind turbines, are listed fully in this thesisen_US
