Electrocardiography (ECG) is an essential part of the initial evaluation of a patient who is suspected to have a heart related problem, especially when heart related diseases are rising in popularity. In order to diagnose heart diseases, the patient is normally supervised by the cardiologist or doctor over a long period of time, which is probably quite time-consuming for the patient. The objective of this thesis is to provide a better alternative, which means that ECG data is recorded and then transmitted from the patient’s location to the doctor’s clinic through a web server, thus allowing the patient to continue his daily activities. However, this solution requires a large memory to store ECG data. Hence, it is important to have an effective data compression method for ECG signals with high compression ratio, while still returns high quality signal for precise diagnosis. In this project, Discrete Wavelet Transform with its advantages was chosen and applied to compress ECG signal, which is recorded with AD8232 chip. This method was implemented in C programming language to run on microcontroller. In addition, a peak detection algorithm based on Pan-Tompkins method was proposed and implemented in Python to compute the heart beat rate. In conclusion, the result of this method is positive with a good compression rate of 6.5 and an acceptable percentage difference of 6.9%, thus allowing fast uploading and downloading through the web server while maintaining the quality of signal.en_US
