Saltwater intrusion is getting more serious in the Vietnam Mekong Delta VMD) under the impact of upstream dams’ development, water demand increasing, complicated tidal regime that cause of increasing 15-25km of intrusion length in 2016 compared with previous years at 8 estuaries. Field investigations were conducted at 500 saltwater points measured along and five cross-sections in Hau River during high tide and low tide conditions. The vertically and longitudinally saltwater distribution along of two branches in Hau River is very complicated. The cross-section 3 was located at 5km from the river mouth had difference saltwater concentration between the surface and the bottom is about 6g/l. The maximum saltwater concentration appears at the deepest point and occurs after the peak of water level 1 hour at the ebb tide. Moreover, the vertical velocity gradually reduces from the surface to the bottom at ebb tide and vice versa, during the flood tide, maximum vertical velocity appears at the middle near the bottom. Finally, some stratification parameters, including Pritchard, Simmon and Richarson numbers show that the partial mixing and moderate stratification condition prevailed in the DinhAn branch during a tidal cycle. These results are the preliminary inquiry for proposing the location and the elevation of saltwater control works and building the operation rules for the existing sluice gates.en_US
