In this thesis, the flow of a viscoplastic fluid in a pipe with the presence of a baffle is investigated. The fluid is of a Bingham type characterized by a yield stress, when the stress is above this, there exists a flow, otherwise, it behaves like a solid. The thixotropic characteristic is also explored, which is a rheological property associated with the microstructure of the material. It can be broken and recovered during a flowing process. Applications of such a fluid are numerous such as sewage and underground drainage, and flow of oil and fresh concrete/cement in pipes or pumping systems. The flow in the pipe is considered to be two-dimensional (2D), i.e., the pipe can be treated as a 2D channel. The baffle is attached to the upper wall, the distance between its tip and the bottom wall, so-called the gap G, is varied taking the values of G/D = 0.75, 0.5 and 0.25. Simulations of the flow at two Reynolds numbers, i.e., Re = 100 and 1000, and several Bingham numbers are performed using Ansys Fluent. Many aspects of the flow such as the streamline patterns, the vortex structures, the velocity field and the unyielded zones are investigated. In addition, influence of the gap on the flow characteristics is examined.en_US
