Title: Success factors and barriers to the development of a circular economy business model for 3D printing and consumables in emerging market

Issue Date: 2024
Abstract:
The global plastic waste crisis is one of the most urgent environmental challenges, as millions of tons of plastic waste are generated annually and largely end up in landfills, natural environments, and oceans. Plastics account for approximately 80% of marine debris, leading to microplastics that threaten ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. This problem is intensified by the inability of existing recycling systems to meet future demand and by the continued reliance on the traditional linear economic model. In response, the circular economy has emerged as a strategy to minimize plastic waste and promote resource efficiency. Additive manufacturing (AM) has gained increasing attention due to its potential for customized production and compatibility with sustainable manufacturing principles. By converting plastic waste into filament materials, AM can support circular economy practices. However, commercialization of recycled filaments remains limited due to regulatory, technical, market, and stakeholder-related challenges. This study examines the current state of plastic waste management, recycling, and 3D printing in Vietnam and proposes a sustainable business model and development plan to advance circular manufacturing.
