Title: Comparison study of the digital transformation in manufacturing between countries in southeast ASIA
Authors: Do Sy Anh

Issue Date: 2024
Abstract:
Southeast Asia has emerged as a dynamic region for the manufacturing industry, with Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia showing the most significant growth in recent years across specific sectors. Vietnam has become a key destination for electronics manufacturers and assemblers, exemplified by Foxconn’s USD 250 million investment in electric vehicle and telecommunication components. However, in terms of value creation, electronics lags behind automotive assembly and semiconductors, where Thailand and Malaysia hold competitive advantages, respectively. The rapid growth of the electric vehicle industry has attracted major Chinese players, such as BYD, Hozon, and Great Wall Motors, to consider investments in Thailand, while companies like Intel, Texas Instruments, and Infineon have invested billions in semiconductor assembly in Malaysia. Indonesia’s Java Island remains a diverse manufacturing hub spanning machinery, electronics, textiles, food, and furniture industries. Despite this growth, a 2022 Microsoft survey highlights that the lack of digital leadership, outdated machinery, budget constraints, and data security concerns remain major barriers to digital transformation (DT) in the region. This thesis conducts a comparative study of Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia to evaluate their performance in digital transformation, considering technical, cultural, informational, and organizational factors, and provides recommendations to guide future actions.
