The study focused on the Ham Luong River, a primary tributary of theMekong River, located in Ben province within the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD). In the first stage of the research, applying RS integrated with ML and the digital shoreline analysis system (GIS-DSAS), I found that riverbank erosion dominated the accretion from 1999 to 2022. Particularly, 87.87 km (68%) of the entire length of the two banks was eroded, resulting in 176.7 ha of land loss, compared to 40 km (31%) and 72.96 ha of accretion. Besides, erosion mainly happened along the right bank, with a mean net bank line erosion of -17.97 m. Considering the five shorter periods (i.e., 1999-2005, 2005-2009, 2009-2014, 2014-2018, and 2018-2022), the results show that erosion has increased in both rate and extent. While riverbanks were accreted by 10.48 ÷ 10.74 ha/year in 1999- 2005, they were increasingly eroded in 2005-2009 and 2009-2014, with a net evolution area of -4.92 ÷ 1.8 ha/year and -7.92 ÷ -5.77 ha/year, respectively. In the subsequent periods, the riverbanks were slightly deposited in an average area of 3.05 ÷ 5.66 ha/year before dramatically eroding in the last period (i.e., 9.89 ÷ 29.76 ha/year). Notably, the riverbank was slightly eroded when being protected by the vegetation belt in 1999-2005, but it was rapidly eroded when the belt disappeared (e.g., in 2018-2022) |
