dc.description.abstractIn the modern era of ubiquitous computing, Location-Based Services (LBS) have experienced a surge in demand, necessitating advanced system design methodologies and innovative geospatial algorithms. This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of the interplay between system design and geospatial algorithms in the context of proximity services. By scrutinizing various algorithms, from basic distance calculations to more intricate spatial queries, this research offers insights into their performance, accuracy, and scalability in different scenarios. In particular, the thesis focuses on the importance of system design in developing effective proximity services, identifies the challenges involved in designing such systems, and proposes solutions to address these challenges. Novel system architectures and design patterns are proposed so as to optimize data retrieval, minimise latency, and ensure user privacy, all while maintaining service accuracy. Case studies of real-world applications are presented to illustrate the practical implications and benefits of my findings. The culmination of this research is a set of best practices and design principles for the development of future location-based proximity services. Moreover, the map tiles utilized in the thesis experiment are sourced from Stamen Design, while the data is obtained from OpenStreetMap.en_US
