This research studied desalination technologies for saline groundwater in arid regions in Morocco using Membrane Capacitive Deionization (MCDI) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems. It addressed agriculture quality and the salinity problem of the arid regions in Morocco. The desalination experiments were conducted using saltwater with sodium chloride and model water mimicking typical Moroccan brackish water.Experimental investigations were carried with 3 different systems: RO lab-scale, RO pilot-scale and MCDI pilot-scale to investigate efficiency and energy consumption of the RO and CDI technologies. Performances of these systems with models’ water were evaluated based on the specific energy consumption (SEC), recovery (Rc) and the salt- removal (Rm) of the experiments. Water samples of selective tests were prepared and analyzed to evaluate the Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) value and ion-selective removal ability of these technologies. Result of the experiments show that RO pilot-scale had higher performance than RO lab-scale due to recirculation and bypass configuration of the RO pilot system. MCDI shows interesting results with selectable removal in 30%, 50% and 70% as well as the rather low SEC ranging from 1-2.5 kWh/m3. Additionally, MCDI also present the different in absorption rate between ions in water which related to the ion-selective removal and SAR selection.en_US
