Title: | Design a process for mitigating flaky test in software development | Authors: | Huynh Thi Nhu Ngoc | Keywords: | Fflaky;Frocess;Fontinuous integration;Flaky test root causes;Flaky test fixing strategies | Issue Date: | 2020 | Publisher: | Vietnamese-German University | Abstract: | Nowadays, in software development, developers are heavily relying on automation testing and continuous integration pipeline to validate all of their changes do not break any functionality. Thus, the quality of the product is secured, and the new feature can be continuedly developed. However, when the pipeline becomes unstable, it damages the goal and wipes out the developer’s productivity. One of the significant factors is flaky test. Flaky test is a test that produces an unreliable outcome, sometimes pass and sometimes fail for the same source code. It blocks the build pipeline, prevents the merging and cost developers from spending hours finding root causes. Furthermore, conducting from many kinds of research the cause of flaky test is tedious to reproduce with a combination of various factors such as timing, build environment, systems, networks, external dependencies and so on. Given that, a process to mitigate flaky tests is highly demanded to reduce their effects, keep the stability pipeline and as a result, reducing the overall cost for the company. By researching different approaches which are applied successfully across the tech companies, different studies about the root cause, the process is conducted to help to solve flaky tests problem. |
