Abstract:
Over the period from 2006 to 2018, Vietnam's economy had experienced many transformations in governance and privatization. As a highly cyclical industry, bank performance reflects the global occurrences, as well as domestic characteristics of the economy. Accordingly, our thesis research question is: “How do micro and macro determinants influence the Vietnam banking system performance?” To shed light on the issue, a sample of data is pooled into unbalanced panel data using 30 most active banks with transparent reporting during 2006 to 2018. In terms of methodology, system generalized method of moment technique is adopted to fix the endogeneity problem. Conclusively, asset quality, capital adequacy, inflation and gross domestic product show negative relation towards banks’ performance; the explanation lies within the nature of the economy and governance factors
