Title: Foreign direct investment and income inequality in Vietnam: evidence from the Vietnamese household living standard survey
Authors: Dau Thi Quynh Dien
Keywords: Foreign investment;Income
Issue Date: 2019
Publisher: Vietnamese-German University
Abstract:
Along with the trends of increasing economic globalization taking place in the last three decades, various theoretical and empirical literatures have been devoted to studying the different effects of FDI on the economy. However, the research on the FDI-income inequality nexus for the case of Vietnam is still limited. This paper explores the relationship between FDI and income inequality by employing panel fixed effect with interaction model and provincial-level data from the Vietnam Household Standards Survey during the period from 2004 to 2016. The findings suggest that FDI alone does not have any significant impact on income inequality. However, FDI increases income inequality indirectly through monthly income per capita channel. The result implies that besides taking the advantages of the FDI inflow, it is necessary to pay more attention to each molecule that constitutes the society to reduce the income gap between classes
