Amidst the severe situation of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, a key issue is whether containment and closure policies have an adverse effect on the employment rate. The Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker (OxCGRT) has categorized these policies into eight sub-indices including school closing, workplace closing, cancel public events, restrictions on gatherings, closing of public transport, stay at home requirements, restrictions on internal movement, and international travel controls. Exploiting the harmonized unemployment rate data in the chosen 39 countries, along with the Coronavirus database and above-mentioned policies, this paper discovers that the aggregated lockdown index of eight containment policies is one of the reasons causing an unprecedented increase in the unemployment rate within 39 groups of the country during the first half of 2020. By using a dynamic panel model with a fixed estimator, the results imply a significant positive relationship between the lockdown index and the unemployment rate. In other words, an increase in lockdown index scores would lead to a minor escalation of the monthly unemployment rate in each country.en_US
