The damper is actuated by a spring SMA actuator and its actuating force is amplified by a wedge mechanism and exerted on the inner cylindrical face of the damper housing to create friction against the housing. The friction between the wedges and housing produces damping force of the damper. After an introduction to SMA actuators and the suspension system of front–loaded washing machines, configuration of the proposed SMA damper is presented. Modelling of the proposed SMA damper is then performed considering required damping force, installation space and cost. Based on the modelling, a prototype SMA damper is then designed, manufactured and assessed through experimental works with discussions. |
