Title: | Laser welding of NiTi shape memory alloy and copper wires | Authors: | Nguyen Phong Gia Huy | Keywords: | Shape memory alloy;Shape memory effect;Laser welding | Issue Date: | 2019 | Abstract: | Shape memory alloy (SMA) is a novel type of material that has found its way in a lot of practical applications for its unique mechanical properties, including the shape memory effect and superelasticity, which arise due to the reversible martensitic transformation. These includes SMA actuators in the automotive and aerospace industry, and superelastic devices in the biomedical industry. In order to integrate shape memory alloys into these applications, we have to join them to other materials and devise a mechanism to activate the shape memory effect. In this work, I investigate joining nickel titanium (NiTi or Nitinol) wire, the most popular shape memory material, with tinned copper (Cu) wire using laser welding. I was able to produce a NiTi-Cu connection that let electricity pass through, making it possible to activate the shape memory effect using resistance heating. A model of an SMA actuator was made and tested, proving this method's viability to join NiTi and Cu wires |
