Title: | Development of a sample submission device used by a walk up system using barcode and RFID authentication | Authors: | Le Thanh Toan | Keywords: | Arduino;Barcode scanner;RFID;Authentication | Issue Date: | 2014 | Publisher: | Vietnamese-German University | Abstract: | Nowadays, analyzing chemical compound to know chemical elements is widely used and extremely important in various industries such as chemicals, petroleum and pharmaceuticals. Analyses are done by submitting samples to chemical analytical systems. Submission process requires users have to walk up to the system and types in some basic information manually to launch an analysis. Data entry may potentially be entered wrongly due to misreading label or carelessness while typing. The objective of the thesis is to develop a demo device that can assist users in the submission process. The device was built from Arduino cheap open sourced platform and its specific development environment, providing user authentication using RFID technology, barcode scanning for sample identification and a user interface. Design, implementation of the user interface and setup were included as part of the project. A local server on a personal computer was developed by using Microsoft Visual Studio C# to simulate the analytical spectral system. Test was done, using the device in a real live environment and execution of different test cases. Test cases were provided and not part of the project. The test were executed by a different person and not part of scope of the thesis. The result showed that the device was able to do following tasks ➢ Scan sample labels by using a barcode scanner. ➢ Authenticate successfully by placing RFID tags close to the device. ➢ Submit the information on the barcode label from any remote location within a local setup network automatically to the analytical system. ➢ Acquire information from the server was received and displayed on a LCD. The study demonstrates the ability to replace manual processes in sample submission by automations. The end users could submit samples without using a keyboard. As the result, there are significant reductions in submission time and typo errors. In conclusion, the study suggests that it´s possible to build a sample submission device with the Arduino open sourced software and hardware using barcode and RFID authentication technology. Further study is recommended to execute more test cases with small size barcode labels, minimized device size and wiring with the latest development boards. |
