In Vietnam, there are many assembly factories in which most tasks are done by human. Although Vietnam attracts numerous investors for its low labor cost, there is still a great need to increase productivity of workers to keep their competitiveness when the other countries, such as Myanmar and Cambodia, are emerging as attractive alternatives. Furthermore, the industrial revolution 4.0 in developed countries are threatening the job security in the developing ones, urging them to increase productivity to compete with robots. Productivity is greatly affected by the way the assembly line is designed and planned, as well as the aid of machines and robots. It is the task of industrial engineers to conduct those design and planning. Currently, there are a lot of attempts to transfer knowledge and train skills for industrial engineering students through various methods, such as gamification, serious game, software simulation, or case study. However, there is still a gap between theory and practice. This gap can be filled by practical experience in laboratories that called Learning Factories, where learners practice the manufacturing theories in a realistic environment. This method has been proven to be useful and effective to train students for years. In Vietnam, there are few learning factories in higher education institutions. Thus, there is an urgent need to establish one, not only to train student with traditional production methods, but also to prepare them for the coming Industry 4.0, where information is collected in real time, giving managers more and faster information for decision making. The goal of the thesis is to design a flexible assembly system equipped with basic IoT (Internet of Things) components for training of assembly, automation, and lean manufacturing technologies for Global Production Engineering and Management program at VietnameseGerman University. The result will be the detail design, including 2D drawings, 3D model of the Learning factory. The factory will include workstations and auxiliary components. An embodiment design of material flow monitoring system using RFID technology will also be developed. Finally, the virtual prototype of the factory is built and tested with simulation software for feasibility analysis. |
