Title: | Apply lean and quality tools to improve efficiency of footwear manufacturing | Authors: | Tran Quoc Vuong | Keywords: | Lean tools;Quality managment tools;Footwear industry | Issue Date: | 2018 | Publisher: | Vietnamese-German University | Abstract: | Nowadays, manufacturing industry become more crucial as it evolve from year to year. They are growing in both size and population. Each factory strive to catch up with growing demands but still dealing with economics issue. Wastes and defect also increase as the process become more complicated. In Viet Nam, production has started long ago but the war slow down the development. As the sequence, the factory still use traditional and old production method. Additionally, labor cost here is cheap which leads to high dependency to worker, the employer are so hesitate to investigate to new technology which are too risky. The savings cost from hiring more worker overwhelm great advance new technology bringing- they thought. However, this seemed to be the best tendency for current factory. But as the world introduce new stuffs with integrated new technology, industry major in Viet Nam have to adapt and change. But it is very difficult due to it take time to spread out concept and actualizing it. For those situation, lean manufacturing become the best solution to help factory boost their efficiency to meet customer demands while waiting for the new technology transition. Lean tools help to reorganize the factory and assist management, control wastes amount, these tools best accommodate semiautomatic process which depends on both worker and machine. In this project, the shoe industry floor layout is the target for improving efficiency. The main reason is the footwear industry in Viet Nam is still at semi-automatic process (machine need worker assisting for operating), they are dependent on worker significantly and manufacturing method is quite traditional and being outdated. . The method and layout changes in factory could be clearly realized and evaluated. On the other hand, the project is not only aimed for conducting new lean method but also evaluating the current stage meanwhile improving in case it is necessary. The lean method has been developed for some decades, therefore some methods were built perfectly and have advantages to be intimated into new standard. Learning from existing management is another way of continuous improvement. To sum up, this project mean to develop and rebuild based on current factory layout and process. It also determines the errors occur or wastes to working on. This could be used for further research or real application with modification where Footwear Company apply and achieve new positive changes. However, it is obvious that the result being observed and graded better if suitable period could extend larger than project time limits. |
