Title: | Digital piracy behavior in Vietnam a qualitative research on video streaming industry | Authors: | Tran Phuc Hien | Keywords: | Digital piracy;Video industry;Consumer behavior | Issue Date: | 2023 | Abstract: | Since the boom in digital technology, digital piracy has become a phenomenon causing significant adverse impacts on the global economy and video industry. Among those, Vietnam became a piracy hotspot in Asia with the third highest piracy rate. This paper aims to understand why digital piracy behavior persists in Vietnam and determine the strategies for curbing such illegal acts while increasing legitimate sales. This paper uses documentary analysis to collect and synthesize previous research about factors influencing digital piracy behavior. Under the case study of Vietnam, this paper determines the key drivers and adopts cultural factors to validate the arguments about Vietnamese people's behavior toward digital piracy. The investigation indicates that collectivist culture of Vietnam creates a culture fostering illegal access to digital goods of individuals, partly due to the weakness of the government's enforcement and legal services. With such findings, this paper evaluates deterrent and preventive strategies causing long-term impacts and encourages innovative measures using digital technology to adapt to the fast development in the digital market. |
