Title: | The gender wage gap in Vietnam in 2016 | Authors: | Pham Dinh Ngoc Thao | Keywords: | Gender wage gap;Vietnam | Issue Date: | 2023 | Abstract: | In Vietnam, the government exerts efforts to ensure gender equality that are observable in plenty of example from the legal framework, namely the Law on Gender Equality and several articles in the Labour Code of Vietnam. Notwithstanding these endeavours, empirical studies demonstrate that women earn lower wages than comparable men in the labour market. Therefore, this paper is conducted in order to estimate the gender wage gap in Vietnam in 2016, identify a number of possible driving forces of this problem and suggest probable solutions to the issue. It is found that averagely, female workers in Vietnam earn less than comparable males by roughly 14.63 percent in 2016. Occupational segregation, unobservable cultural and attitude factors, as well as the gap in the official retirement age between men and women can likely explain some extent of the gender income inequality. On the other hand, education seems to be a potential approach to address the persistent problem of gender income inequality. Policy-makers could consider enhancing efforts to elevate levels of educational attainment, improving the mindset of the public, ensuring equal employment opportunities and wages for all genders, as well as penalizing gender discrimination behaviours in the workplace. Future research on the topic of gender inequality in the labour market can extend the research focus to also examine the difference in employment opportunities available for each gender group. |
