Title: | Impacts of peri-urbanization in fast-growing cities in Vietnam on to original communities | Authors: | Ky Bao Chau | Keywords: | Peri-urbanization;Sustainable developmen | Issue Date: | 2019 | Abstract: | This study describes the impacts of peri-urbanization in the Mekong Delta’s largest city, Can Tho, one fast-growing city in Vietnam. The study employs a case study design due to the nature of the problem, which is too little understanding has been acknowledged and documented on the phenomenon systematically and holistically. A mixed approach of both qualitative and quantitative methods is used for the analyses in this study. The analyses of textual and spatial data suggest a total of 24 negative issues and 03 positive changes that could be categorized into 04 main groups of impacts. In addition, the results from a simple calculation model helps classified the extents of impacts on to the ‘financial instruments’ for starting a new life of the affected, original people into 03 main levels. The fact that about 59% of the original households had left their homeland because they could not afford the new life after the periurbanization indicates that the impacts are more severe than commonly known to the mass. Other findings also point out that some important cultural, environmental and social values have vanished. This could be an extremely dangerous trend should these impacts also happen in other areas which have not been studied yet. Sustainable development requires not only economic values to be gained, but also social and environmental ones to be protected and conserved. However, peri-urbanization itself does not always mean bad things. The overall situation of this case as well as many other cases in most cities of Vietnam is suggested to have rooted from the abuse of power by the government, the violations of law by the developers, and the hidden collusion between them. The solutions to this could lie in the institutional renovation of the governmental structure and mechanism towards better managing the resources and building consensus with the people. This study uses a wide-range of methodology and data sources that could prove to bring more comprehensive, insightful, and detailed at the same time, about the actual situation of what is truly happening in peri-urban areas along the development process |
