The proposed damper consists of a shear-mode MR damping part and a power generator featuring permanent magnets and induction coils. The two parts are integrated into a single damper in order to replace traditional passive dampers of washing machines. In the damping part, the gap between the shearing shaft and housing fill up with MR fluid to generate controllable damping force when subjected to a magnetic field. Magnetic coils are placed on the grooves of the housing to produce a closed magnetic loop as electrically excited. The power generator comprises a housing slotted for induction coils and a shaft end carrying permanent magnets. Vibration from the washing tube causes a motion of the damper shaft, which in turn generates induced currents in the induction coils. The induced currents then directly power the magnetic coils of the dampers, creating an adaptive damping force to suppress the vibration. |
