A case study on economic empowerment and reproductive health | Authors: | Trinh Thi Lien Anh | Keywords: | Economic empowerment;Reproductive health;Economic development;Women's position | Issue Date: | 2020 | Abstract: | Supporting the viewpoints of National Strategy on Gender Equality for the period 2011 – 2020 recognizing gender equality as an important part of national socio-economic development strategy and as the foundation of human resource development for the Party and the State as well as to improve the life of every citizen and the society, this thesis will discuss the topic Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) that emerged in the socioeconomic study recently. The study that focuses on the power/agency that accommodates women to achieve economic advance and the ability to make decisions on the proceeds gain from it. Later, this thesis also looks into previous research on women in Vietnam and analyze the advantage such as growing number of women entrepreneurial and disadvantages women face while participating in economic activities including barriers to employment, norms or the vulnerability of “female-headed” households or also known as “feminization of the poor” problem. Women in the urban industrial regions tend to participate more in the official employment/wage systems economic activities than self-employment productions that are more popular among the rural areas. The final part will be a quantitative case study on the impact of WEE on reproductive health in Vietnam and comparing this to Indonesia to observe the differences. This thesis aims to give a clear understanding of women role and contribution to the economy and its effect in the socioeconomic study as well as the importance of gender equality in developing economies |
